How it Works

RENTER

Find what you need.

Use the search feature at the top of the TurtlShell page to find what you're looking for or browse through the categories on the left-hand side. Listings matching your criteria will be displayed.

When browsing a listing, make sure the item matches your criteria:

  • The item's description indicates that it meets your needs.
  • The rental period matches your needs (daily, monthly, etc.)
  • You will be able to meet at the location listed to pick up your rental.

​If you have any questions, be sure to message the lender before requesting a rental. 

Choose your dates.

Choose the length of your rental by entering in Start and End dates. Also, choose preferred times for pickup and drop off. 

Make a payment.

You will be taken to a checkout page where you can make a payment for your request. You will be charged only if the lender accepts the transaction within 1 day. If the lender declines or does not respond, no charge is made. 

Meet to pickup the rental.

Meet the lender at an agreed upon time to pickup the rental. Do a thorough inspection of the rental and make sure all parts are there. Mark the order as complete on your transaction page. You will not be able to receive a return on your deposit until you do so. 

Return the rental.

Meet the lender at an agreed upon time to return the rental. Typically, you will meet in the same location you picked up the rental. Clarify with the lender if this is unclear.


LENDER

Set up your payment account.

You will need to setup a Stripe account in order to receive payments for your rentals and have your identity and banking information verified. 

Click your user icon and go to Settings > Payments to finishing setting this up.

Post a listing. 

Click the "Post a Listing" button next to your user icon. Choose the category for your item. 

Choose a title and price for your listing. The rental price will be set for the time ranges you choose (daily, weekly, monthly, semester). Please make multiple listings for multiple time range types for the same item. TurtlShell takes an 20% service fee from each transaction. This includes any third party processing fees. 

Provide a detailed description of the item. You will also need to provide a meeting location to give the renters the listed item. Choose a safe and public place to meet. Expect to receive the item in the same location when it is returned unless you make a different agreement with the renter. It is highly recommended that you post photos of your item along with your description. You may include a deposit fee and preferred pickup/drop off times. 

Accept a rental request. 

When a renter makes a request, you will need to review and accept the request within 1 day. Before accepting, message the renter to confirm meeting time and location and return time and location. 

Meet to hand over and pick up rental.

Do a thorough inspection of your item before meeting. You will meet the renter at the agreed upon time and location in order to hand over the rental and have it returned to you. Return the deposit fee from the rental request page.

  • How does TurtlShell work?

TurtlShell makes it easy for you to find what you need and earn from your listings. We match renters and lenders (owners) and handle all your transactions through our secure platform.

Renter: Search for what you need. Rent and pickup. Use and return.

  • What can I list/find on TurtlShell?

Almost anything! TurtlShell is a great platform for renting non-perishable goods. We understand that our customers have a variety of interests and needs and that’s why we created groups where you can find what you need or make a suitable listing. These are some of the groups and items that you can find on TurtlShell:

    • Outdoor and recreation: camping tent, GPS device, sleeping bag, bike,hammock, helmet
    • Home improvement: power drill, basic tools, safety equipment, power cleaner
    • Formal wear: tuxedos, ball gowns, costumes, dresses
    • Academic: textbooks, calculators, lab equipment
    • Party and wedding: projector, movie screen, foldable chairs, karaoke machine
    • Medical: wheelchair, crutches, mobility scooter
    • Electronics: drone, sound system, speakers, amp

  • Where is TurtlShell available?

Use TurtlShell anywhere in the US. We are actively growing our listings in the Washington D.C. Metro Area and New York City.

  • How can I trust the person I’m renting from/to?

We ensure trust by providing multiple layers of safety and checks:

    • Trust Scores: All users have the option to display Trust Scores which pull the user reputations from previous transactions from sites like Ebay, Etsy, Yelp, Uber, and AirBnb.
    • Public Reviews: Each transaction can be rated and reviewed by the opposite party and it’s visible to others. We encourage all users to work build their online profiles with ratings and reviews.
    • Deposit system: Lenders may charge a refundable deposit fee for their rentals to cover against loss and damage. We will be implementing an insurance option in the future.
    • Secured Transactions: Secured transactions are ensured through Stripe, which requires ID verification. We do noT store your payment or banking information in our databases.

  • How can I contact TurtlShell?

  • Is TurtlShell a free service?

It’s free to make a listing on TurtlShell. However, we take 20% of every transaction from lender’s side in order to support secured payment system and enhance user experience. This includes any third party processing fees.

  • How can I delete my account?

In case you need to delete your account, click on your profile picture and choose “Settings” from the drop down menu. Under settings, click on the “Account” on your left side and you will see “Permanently delete my account” option at the bottom of the page.

  • How can I post a listing?

Click the "+ List or Request" button next to your user icon. Choose the category for your item and listing type.

  • How much should I charge for renting an item?

It depends on a lot of things like the original value, current condition, and how frequently you want to rent the item out. The best thing to do is to check the pricing of the similar items on TurtlShell and set a competitive price to begin with. Remember, price is one of the incentives for people to rent stuff instead of buying. You can always charge a refundable deposit fee to ensure security of your item.  

  • Do you have an insurance?

We currently have a refundable deposit system. When you post a listing, make sure to choose a deposit fee, which will be returned to a renter when your rental is returned. A insurance option is coming soon.

  • What if someone damages my stuff?

We hope this will not happen. We have a deposit system that covers you. When you post a listing, make sure to choose a deposit, which will be returned to a renter if everything is ok. Else, you will take a portion or full amount of deposit. Before renting out an item, do a thorough inspection and make sure everything is ok. Do the same when you get your item back. If something is wrong please inform the counter-party immediately about it. We encourage you to take a photo and notify us via info@turtlshell.com in case things go wrong and we will help mediate the case.

  • How can I remove the listing?

On the listing page for the item, click “Close Listing.”

  • How do I edit my listing?

Go to your listing and click “Edit Listing.” All your listings are posted on your profile page.

  • When do I get my money?

After, both parties confirm that the transaction is complete, the money will be deposited to your bank account through Stripe.


 RENTER

  • What if I need to cancel my rental? 

Contact the owner of the item in regards to cancelling a rental. Cancellations may be subject to a fee.

  • I can’t find what I need? 

Bummer! We have a solution. Click the "+List or Request" button next to your user icon. Choose the category for your item and click “Request for an item”. You will be notified if someone answers your request.

  • Can I contact the owner of an item before renting?

Yes! When you visit their profile you will see “contact” option under their profile picture.
